I must have bought a different machine to the other reviewers!!! August 10, 2010 Jeanne My husband wanted to replace his Lite On dvd recorder (which was a nightmare from start to finish) with a new one. After much reading of reviews I decided to go with the Samsung despite all the negative reviews of which the most common was the manual was unreadable and set up was a nightmare. Now considering our experience with the Lite On "manual" and many hours of trying to work out how to use it we decided we could probably cope with the Samsung. Good price and excellent specs were the decider.
So with intrepidation we opened the box and looked at the incomprehensible manual only to find an easy step by step , easy lay out with content menu ......I can only think that people find reading manuals quite difficult these days.
Difficult to set up? .......after half an hour it was up and running. It was not the machine that took half an hour but where to plug in the scarts, leads etc. So far my husband has recorded onto disc, onto the hard drive , played dvd's. Picture quality is 10/10 sound quality 10/10 ease of use 10/10 love it. AND we do not have an LCD tv just a bog standard terrestial tv next on the list is an LCD tv and that will be Samsung.
I can't comment on freeview we did not want it, but had no choice to have it .... we have digital and so far no problem. We have no issue with time to load, or the "slow " remote ...... I think we must have a different model( we definitely don't) or people are way too impatient !!!!!
Love this machine........... if you want to record, play dvds, etc it is great and an absolute bargin.
Make your own mind uo , if you hate it you can always send it back.
Ps I don't work for Samsung.
Works a treat - no problems at all! August 25, 2010 Jamesy I've had this recorder for 6 months now and I'm genuinely shocked at all the negative reviews on here!
I use it daily to record programmes from satellite & cable (using the timer) and it has NEVER performed anything other than 100% perfectly! Recorded programs on the HDD are just perfect - I've yet to see ONE glitch!
The item itself looks GORGEOUS and it's EXTREMELY quiet. Menu system / user interface is very intuitive and I've used the DVD to play discs regularly without any issues.
I don't use the DVD recorder regularly - but have used it a couple of times with Philips DVD+RW discs and not had a problem.
This has been a great buy for me (picked it up brand new for around £50). I would say if you are looking for a SD HDD recorder and you don't want Sky+, you CANNOT GO WRONG with this!!
Perfection December 16, 2009 Patrick Linnane (kilkee, county clare Ireland) 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
Couldnt believe that within 10 minutes of fitting the scarts that this little baby started working to perfection.
Samsung have completely outdone themselves.
I suggest you buy this product.
What is everyone else's problem? April 14, 2010 M. Ferry (UK) 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
I will have to start off by saying that I do not have a clue what any of the negative reviewers were doing to have all the problems they described. Even BEFORE the firmware upgrade, I did not have any of the problems that are being described. I have since upgraded to see if there was any difference, but there does not appear to be any benefit from it. I should also add that I am experienced in the field of electronics, but even my Mother who really isn't, is having no issues with this recorder after I have shown her the basics on how to work it.
@ the people that say you cannot change the recording quality, this is WRONG, you can.
@ the people that say that the unit is sluggish, well, it's really not. Ok it has to seal the sectors of the disc and the end of each recording, but all optical recorders have to do this and it always takes a few seconds. The EPG is also pretty responsive, infact, I cannot think on a feature I have used on the machine that is not snappy to respond. Oh, and I am very impatient when it comes to response times of devices.
The only reasons that I have chosen not to give this 5 stars, is due to 2 minor issues:
1) the unit has hung (frozen) on me ONCE, to which the only remedy was to unplug it at the wall and switch back on. This has not happened again so it should not be an issue
2) the remote occasionally decides to not allow you to use the number buttons to change the channel. This is not really an issue however, as if you hit the OK button it presents you with a menu of all the channels that you can quickly (as opposed to sluggishly...) flick through to choose your channel. There is also of course the 3rd option of using the EPG to choose your channel.
One other noticeable point is that if you have another DVD recorder in your home and will maybe record on one unit and watch on another, this machine appears to use a different formatting method for the discs, and there are slight issues in that if I erase/format the disc on this machine it will not work on my other (Sanyo) machine. This works in reverse as well though, and upon inserting a formatted disc from the Sanyo into this machine, it simply states that it needs reformatted to use it. For watching recorded content however, cross platform usage is not an issue.
But hey, nothings perfect. If you want to get closer to that fantasy value of perfection though, then go and spend the extra on as said by others, a Sony or Panasonic. Considering that I picked this unit up for £80, I really cant fault it for the array of features and functionality it offers.
On the whole, if you aren't willing to spend that bit extra on a dearer unit, and you are either technically minded or can spend half an hour or so going through the menus to familiarise with the machine as most people will with anything new, then this machine doesn't (in my opinion) have any major faults that should make it a "must avoid" unit.
OK with new firmware December 5, 2009 locksheath (UK) 10 out of 15 found this review helpful
Good value for money. But make sure you load the latest firmware, download, unzip, burn to dvd and play.
I think the previous reviews refer to problems that are now fixed in the main.
